Space mutiny names11/7/2023 ![]() Although Hathaway was in his mid-to-late 40's when this was recorded, Boxey seems to have been written and played as being a bit younger than that. The youngest cast member is Noah Hathaway, who returns as a grown-up Boxey. This production is more cerebral, and a bit more grounded in plausible science. The original series always painted with broad brush strokes, and featured stories children could easily understand. Fortunately, the writer and director allows the players to be their mature selves, and presents a story in which the Galactica's crew has aged in real time along with us fans.Īnd because the fans have all grown up, these new Galactica audio episodes are in many ways more complex and intelligent than the campy TV series that inspired them. They're decades older, and you can hear that in the tones and qualities of their voices. This is a very recent production, so the actors are, of course, much older than they were when they shot BSG in the late 1970's. Anne Lockhart also appears in this episode, but as a computer's voice, rather than her BSG character, Sheba. Assuming you're enough of a Battlestar Galactica original series fan to know which actors played which characters, you'll then understand who's talking in each vignette.įor example, the CD cover for the episode known as "Fail Safe" bears a nice sci-fi painting-style portrait of Laurette Spang and Sarah Rush, so savvy Galactica fans will understand the characters they're hearing are supposed to be Cassiopeia and Flight Corporal Rigel. I found it was helpful to look at the sleeve of each CD, because each one tells you which actors are on that CD. In some cases, this can be a bit confusing. This makes for a very interesting dynamic, because you, the listener, are expected to know this is a story about the Galactica and her crew, but the ship is never mentioned by name, and most of the characters never speak each other's names. Read the very nice booklet included with this CD set, and you'll learn the producers met with Universal's licensing department and had them review all the material prior to publication, so as to avoid any sort of copyright infringement claims. "Unauthorized" might not even be the right word to use. Without any kind of licensing deal, the producers assembled an impressive collection of "Battlestar Galactica" acting alumni and got them to bring their old characters back to life for this unauthorized sequel to the original 1978 series. ![]() The most remarkable thing about this collection of audio dramas is that it exists.
